We are seeking an enthusiastic, confident, volunteer Treasurer to join our small Board of dedicated Trustees, ideally a treasurer, or someone with accounting or book-keeping experience and familiarity with financial oversight and legal compliance. Acquaintance with the charity sector is desirable but not essential.

The Treasurer role

The Treasurer holds the Director to account for the Charity’s finances, maintains financial controls and compliance as a Registered Charity, reports on the financial health of the organisation and produces an annual financial report.

The Treasurer works with all staff and fellow trustees to ensure that there are transparent and clear financial processes, policies and procedures; and efficiently and appropriately updates the Board of Trustees on financial matters. This includes oversight of the reserves, assets, investments; annual report and accounts and their legal requirements as well as regulatory deadlines and making Gift Aid claims.

Our finances are not overly complex, the processes are automated and data input is done by part-time contract staff and the Treasurer. The turnover is small, expenditure consists of: labour costs, overheads and engagement in activities in education and exhibitions. The volume of transactions is modest.  Income is from external funding, sponsorship, donations, interest from investment, ticket sales, gift aid and small-scale retail. The charity benefits from owning all its assets.

Commitment

2-3 hours per week on average, with 4 Board Meetings, 6 Finance and Governance Meetings per annum and monthly meetings with the Director. Meetings are in person and/online during the daytime.

Essential personal criteria and skills

  • Good, empathetic communication and team skills, with an ability to be objective, honest and non-judgemental.
  • A commitment to the vision, mission and values of the Stradling as well as to our policies and procedures.
  • Financial qualifications and/or bookkeeping experience, computer literacy and some financial management expertise at SME/charity level.

As Treasurer to the Charity, you will also become a Trustee. Trustees are expected to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and understand their role as a Trustee, and ideally some understanding of charity governance. Key to the role is ensuring our accountants place timely returns with the Charity Commission and ensuring the charity complies with accounting policies and regulations, as well as audit/independent examination.

Demonstrated ability to oversee: the budget, cash flow, income, grants, donations/gift aid and day to day receipts and payments carried out by our staff; ensure we have clear, accurate records of these financial transactions as well as the bank accounts, and shared oversight of investments and restricted funds.
