The All-Electric House

19 October – 16 November

This exhibition is our contribution to the centenary celebration of the founding of the Electrical Association for Women (EAW) in conjunction with the women’s collective Electric Dreams.

Our focus will be on the All-Electric House designed by architect Adrian Powell and built in Bristol in 1935 for the EAW. The concept of this house was to demonstrate the transformative power of electricity to free women from the drudgery and fatigue of housework, and allow them to pursue employment and other career opportunities. The house was furnished by P E Gane Ltd., whose Managing Director, Crofton Gane, was a pioneer of modernist design in the UK.

The All-Electric House became a beacon for innovation and progress, showcasing the remarkable potential of new electrical technology, and featuring a comprehensive array of electrical appliances and gadgets. From electric cookers, refrigerators, and fires in every room to drying cupboards, electric clocks, and food warmers, the All-Electric House became a symbol of progress, empowerment and emancipation for women everywhere.

The All-Electric House was more than just a show home—it was a testament to the transformative power of technology and its role in advancing gender equality.
